Hot Wheels introduces Roborace self-driving race car model

Roborace has plans to take humans out of the cockpit in a futuristic machine-versus-machine race series, but before that happens, it’s putting its Robocars in the hands of people—quite literally. That’s because the latest Robocar is a 1:64 scale model in the form of a Hot Wheels toy. Hot Wheels and Roborace announced the new toy car on Tuesday, and it’s an exact depiction of the Robocar self-driving electric racer. The Robocar is still in development, with Roborace working with its DevBot prototype to hone the self-driving systems.  Roborace Hot…

With Smart’s global sales dipping 4.6 percent to just 128,802 units in 2018, parent company Daimler may be looking to drop the brand or at least offload some of the risk, according to the latest reports out of Europe. Quoting a company insider, Handelsblatt reported on Saturday that Daimler’s incoming CEO, Ola Kaellenius, is open to dropping the brand if it doesn’t start making profits. Daimler doesn’t provide brand-specific financial results but Smart is thought to be a perennial money-loser, with the losses over the brand’s two-decade life thought to…

Bentley’s Continental GT is renowned for its luxury but the vehicle is also a highly capable performance machine, especially in 12-cylinder guise. Bentley will use the 2019 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this June to highlight that fact, with the automaker calling on Rhys Millen to race to the clouds in the latest Continental GT. Millen, a Pikes Peak veteran, entered last year in a Bentley Bentayga and claimed a record for production SUVs with his time of 10:49.9. Take a closer look at the McLaren 720S supercar’s complex suspension

Numerous systems go into making a high-performance car, and while a powerful engine is almost always one of them, engineers never forget about the suspension. What’s a lot of power good for if it handles like a sloppy mess? The McLaren 720S uses a very neat system, although it’s mighty complex. Thankfully, we have explainer extraordinaire Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained to help us digest the trickery going on. McLaren calls its setup the Proactive Chassis Control II, and namely, it uses fluid in the dampers. The system also foregoes…

Here’s what every button on an F1 steering wheel does

Glancing at a modern Formula 1 race car‘s steering wheel reveals a very complex contraption, and it’s just as in-depth of a wheel as it suggests. Mercedes-AMG, the reigning F1 champion, recently published a video with driver Valtteri Bottas to give fans a closer look at what action each button performs. Obviously, some of the finer details are shrouded in mystery since the team doesn’t want to give away any of its performance secrets. For example, Bottas shows us the “Strat” knob, which controls power mode settings during a race.…

2021 BMW iX3 spy shots

Prototypes for an electric version of the BMW X3 have been spotted and follow an earlier sighting of a test mule. The vehicle, which will go by the name iX3, is confirmed for launch in late 2020, meaning we’ll likely see it arrive as a 2021 model. After stumbling with the oddball i3, BMW decided to change its approach to electric cars by developing battery-powered versions of its core models as opposed to launching standalone EVs. The move makes more sense now that electric cars are becoming more widely accepted,…
