1934 Rolls-Royce Merlin touches down in Jay Leno’s Garage

If it’s an oddball kind of car, chances are, it will have its time in the spotlight on Jay Leno’s Garage. On the latest episode, Leno doesn’t welcome a guest, but instead pulls a labor of love from his own collection. It’s none other than a 1934 Rolls-Royce powered by the historic Merlin aircraft engine. Like so many of the stories featured on JLG, it’s far from conventional. Leno says he heard of a gentleman in England who built a handful of cars with aircraft engines under the hood. The…

File this one under modifications we’d never even imagine. French tuning company Danton Arts Kustoms revealed on Instagram it has a Hemi V-8-powered Porsche 911 in the works. If that doesn’t sound mad enough, there’s a catch. The V-8 isn’t going in the rear where the flat-6 engine once sat. Instead, it’s up front. What possessed the minds at Danton Arts Kustoms to dream up this creation is far beyond our comprehension. Purists beware, the photos and renderings will not please you. Others, though, may find the Hemi-powered 911 delightful.…

As long as it’s possible, Aston Martin will keep the V-12 engine alive.  The commitment comes as automakers begin to take a hard look at large-displacement engines. New emissions and fuel economy regulations around the world will make it more difficult for an engine like the V-12 to comply. Marek Reichman, executive vice president and chief creative officer for both Aston Martin and Lagonda, told Top Gear in a report published Friday that he believes the automaker has the ability to keep the V-12 in production for some time and…

Ford introduces smart key fobs to thwart hackers

Ford has a solution to keep hackers from stealing crucial information encoded in a key fob. The automaker announced last week that its smart key fobs will include a sleep mode to prevent hackers from decrypting key signals. A hacker is capable of using what’s called a “relay box” to extend a signal and unlock, lock, or start a car without the owner’s doing or knowledge. Worse, the data could be used to create a duplicate key fob. Ford’s new key fobs will include a sleep mode. Essentially, when the…
